Feaured Artist: Melinda Young

Contemporary jeweller Melinda Young's production work is an erray of graphic pieces. Using bold colours, crisp, distinct shapes and acrylic as a primary material - her pieces inherit a real tactile quality. Read on to discover her inspirations, influences and what's to come for Melinda...

What got your started on your artistic path?

I grew up in a creative, craft focussed family – both my parents are gifted craftspeople. It is not surprising that I have followed a creative path after a childhood spent drawing, painting and experimenting with all manner of crafts including macrame and leatherwork.

After several years at university focussing on art theory and painting, I was ultimately attracted to jewellery as a vehicle for expression as I felt that it had a great potential for conveying my conceptual ideas. So I dropped out of an almost completed degree and started again, switching my studies to jewellery and the rest is history...

What inspires you?

Architecture, plants, the landscape – wild and urban, people, materials, the act of making and increasingly traditional and tribal jewellery forms.

What is you favourite colour palette at the moment?

I love colour, but I tend to always work with only one colour on a piece – so my work is usually always monochromatic, even though there may be several colour stories within a body of work. Although I tend to be drawn more towards warm colours, a recent collection of exhibition work has used lots of green.

Tell us a bit about your studio space...

My studio is in the lovely big light filled attic of our house – my creative bubble.

If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsperson (alive or dead) who would it be?

I LOVE visiting other artists studios, I think as makers, we are always so curious about seeing how other people surround themselves when they work. This is such a hard question because there are so many I would love to visit... I often wonder what the studio of the late Dutch jeweller Onno Boekhoudt was like.

What piece of jewellery do you cherish the most?

I have many, many very special pieces of jewellery. Probably the piece I cherish the most is my letter 'M' Alphabet ring by New Zealand jeweller Warwick Freeman. It is special for a long list of personal reasons and was purchased on a golden day spent in Melbourne with great friends. Also the maker, Warwick Freeman, is one of my jewellery heroes and the marvellous story he told me about the inspiration for this work reminds me not to take things too seriously and that anything can be possible to a maker if you give yourself permission.

What is next for Mel Young?

Lots of exciting things!!! An exhibition at Fingers Gallery in Auckland with Lauren Simeoni called Unnatural Tendencies in October see: www.fingers.co.nz. I have work in a group show curated by Tricia Tang that opens in Hong Kong in November before touring to Sydney, Taipei & Bangkok. Over the coming months I will be visiting Canberra to conduct research and work on a large-scale piece for a national touring exhibition called Life in Your Hands which opens at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery next March. Then starting to develop on a new body of work for a solo exhibition... and a new range of production work is on the boil!

Featured Artist: Kanimbla Clay

Kanimbla Clay is created by ceramicist Helen Hay. Set amongst the valleys and bushland of Kanimbla, Helen produces precious, visually organic vessels that resonate with her natural surroundings.

What attracted you/got you started on your artistic path?

As far back as I can remember I've always had a paintbrush in my hand, and have always loved being creative. Going to Art college after high school was the real turning point in my artistic direction though.

What inspires you?

The natural environment around me.

Where do you find the inspiration for the designs on your pieces?

Out here in the Kanimbla Valley. I am very fortunate to live and work in such a beautiful place. My workshop looks out across the valley to the escarpment, so I get to observe flora, fauna and the amazing changes of light. Since being here I have been so absorbed in my surroundings, and its great to see that coming through in my work.

Tell us a bit about how you source some of your clay…

I actually buy it from Potters Needs in Oberon. I used to dig for my clay when I was at Uni, but I unfortunately don't have the time at present. Next year I will be doing alot more experimental work, I'll be doing some pit firings out here on my property and I will be hopefully sourcing some local clay. I've heard that there are some great clay deposits around this area.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Kanimbla Clays pieces have a very delicate, natural, handmade feel whilst maintaining a high standard in quality.

Tell us a bit about your studio space (if you have images as well, that’d be great!)

My workshop is located out here on my property in Kanimbla. We were lucky enough to inherit a huge colourbond shed when we moved here. I was originally using just a small corner of the shed but as Kanimbla Clay is growing I have now taken over 2/3's of it. Im looking to renovate the old stable into a workshop and office, but thats next year.

Its been a real experience having my studio out here, I get so much wildlife through everyday. I grew up in a small vllage in the UK and the most exciting things I used to see were badgers and deer,I will never get tired of seeing a mob of female roo's with their joeys bounding past the workshop

If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsmen (alive or dead) who would it be?

Andy Goldsworthy, I love the way he works with natural materials. He'll use thorns,twigs, weaving and abit of clever balancing instead of glue & nails to hold things together. I'd like to see how much of the forest is in his work space.

What hand held object do you cherish the most?

A hand painted and carved wooden horse from Sweden. It was my Nana's, and its a part of my memories of her.

What is next for Kanimbla Clay?

More homewares. More electric lights, and hopefully another kiln!

Szilvia Gyorgy never stops surprising us here at Breathing Colours. Her continual innovative use of materials, along with her amazing techincal skills, create some extremely unique and beautiful works. We hope you enjoy our interview with Szilvia; good luck not being jealous of her stunning ceramics studio and it's surroungings!

What attracted you/got you started on your artistic path?

It seemed easier to communicate through expressing myself visually rather than verbally.

What inspires you?

Almost everything around me, both beautiful and ugly things.

How would you describe your aesthetic, as it varies from your jewellery to ceramics?

That is a good question. Firstly I try to reflect on things I experienced or observed, then I think about what materials would be ideal for it and how it could fit a function. They are both explorations through materials. Ceramics is more of an adventure about the interaction between people and how they use space around them, jewellery is more about people in their very immediate personal space. The aesthetic follows.

What inspires your choice of materials when making jewellery?

I have been taken away by the qualities of metal like silver, stainless steel, brass, however we are surrounded by so many natural (gum nuts) and man made materials (all plastics have some interesting qualities) and most have something to offer.

Tell us a bit about your studio space...

I make my ceramics at Newington Armory, I have 2 kilns, a wheel and a huge space that is shared with artists of all disciplines, it is great that there is always a chance that one meets someone special.

My jewellery studio can almost be anywhere. I have been very conscious in keeping the tool box small. I have a beautiful big table at home, but I tend to take my basic tools anywhere I go. They were in danger in a London airport recently thanks to some really strict rules about weight restrictions in check-in luggage.

If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsmen (alive or dead) who would it be?

Picasso's would be nice to look at.

What is next for Szilvia Gyorgy and her work?

I am experimenting with colours these days with both ceramics and jewellery. Lots of ideas floating around and the studios are full with pieces half finished, I am very curious to see what will leave the studio at the end.

What attracted you/got you started on your artistic path?

Travelling! In 2006 my husband and I left for Europe we travelled extensively and it was getting off the beaten track in places like Egypt, Jordan and Turkey that really started getting the design juices started and inspired me to create.

What inspires you?

The environment around me, both the natural and built forms.

What is your favourite colour pallete at the moment?

At the moment I am really drawn to muted tones like light blues, greens and pinks.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Bold, organic and sculptural.

Tell us a bit about your studio space...

At the moment my studio space co-exists with my one year old son Akira. If I am lucky I manage to carve out a small clearing on the family table and set to work.

If you could peek inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsmen (alive or dead) who would it be?

Carlo Scarpa the Italian architect, as well as glass and furniture designer.

What piece of jewellery do you cherish the most?

My most cherished piece of jewellery would have to be a vintage gold filligree cuff passed down to me from my grandmother.

What is next for Keiko?

Lots of experimentation! We are currently looking at incorporating some semi-precious stones into our designs.

The theme for this year is ‘Tiered’.

A tier is one of a series of rows or ranks rising one behind or above another, a layer, level or stratum. ‘Tiered’

refers to something that is arranged in tiers, rows or layers, often used in combination.

This exhibition will be open to the public from 23^rdNovember -24^th December2011

Please note: we will be leaving the exhibition on display (to be seen through the window) over our Christmas break until we reopen towards the end of January 2012.

Artists who are selected for the exhibition are required to provide up to three series, each of which should contain three to five individual works (between 3-15 works in total).

Depending on the amount of work submitted, some pieces may not be displayed immediately. However, all works sold at exhibition will be removed from display at the time of purchase, allowing for sold pieces will be replaced with new ones. If a customer is interested in the work of a particular artist, we may also be able to show them more examples that are held in reserve.

Artists who are selected will be required to pay an entry fee of $75, this will cover promotional costs, installation and opening night etc. Breathing Colours takes a 33% commission on all sales.

Paintings and 2D artworks must be within the dimensions 50cm x 50cm (frame included, if framed).

Sculptures, jewellery and object art should not exceed 40cm in any one direction.

Submissions are due by the 1^st of October, 2011.

Current Exhibition: Let Them Eat Cake by Carrie McDowell

Carrie McDowell explores the idea of excess, using Marie Antoinette as a perfect source of inspiration. Indulging in the use of colour, texture and materials, Carrie recreates jewellery reminiscent of the ostentatious and ornate pieces commonly worn throughout 17^th and 18^th Centuries.

The exhibition is running from the 30^th of August to the 10^th of September, so be sure to drop by and indulge yourself.

Featured Artist: Ashley Fiona

Ashley Fiona creates small and tactile pieces. Her work is very utilitarian, however this does not override the real sense of character and quirky charm a lot of Ashley's work inherits, a real favourite here at Breathing Colours!

What started you working as a ceramicist?

The affair started in my first year at uni in 2006, where beginners (including myself) were asking me for advice on clay making skills and techniques... I couldn't answer them at first (I had to ask myself why they were asking me!). There was something more to this seductive material that I had to know more about myself... The discovery continues - Which is part of the beauty of the medium, the potential for discovery is limitless.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My memories and my environment.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Precious keep-safes with a quirky twist.

Tell us a bit about your studio. Do you work alone? Share your space?

My current studio is my lounge room coffee table! My house mates share the space... Does that count?

As a ceramicist do you have a favourite mug you have you sip your morning tea/coffee out of?

Yes, most definately! I eat and drink almost always from my hand-made collection, it makes whatever you are eating/drinking so much more enjoyable. Hand-made food out of a hand-made bowl, life's simplicities make me smile. For tea I love to drink out of my Sandy Lockwood salt-fired mug and for coffee nothing beats my large porcelain mug by Rosa Chan.

I know that ceramics isn’t your only creative outlet, can you fill us in on your 52 weeks project?

52weeks2011 is a photographic project Vicki Grima and myself are currently working on. We (or you, if you have a suggestion, we welcome suggestions!) set a theme for each week and take seven photos based on that theme. It keeps us busy workers creative on a manageable level... And very much on our toes work-wise. It's an enjoyable creative tangent in contrast to my clay making, it also inspires my ceramics, they compliment one another.

What’s next for Ashley Fiona? Travel? New work? Inspirations?

Ideally travel... But that will have to wait for now as new work is being made (yes, in my lounge room on my coffee table) for an exhibition at the end of the yearn titled The Narrative Knot at Manly Art Gallery (December 2011 to January2012). Currently, I have an exhibition of my entire Honours work from 2010 at Hawkesbury Regional Art Gallery titled Human Condition which continues to 21 August. This year is shaping up to be busy and busier... Which is always a good thing for an artist!

Featured Artist: Roxanne Lillis

Roxanne Lillis is a much loved artist here at Breathing Colours. She creates subtle paintings, using a 'soft' pallette of colours and when viewed, her work produces a very strong presence. Roxanne's paintings range from landscapes to figutrative and may vary in 'genre', but they all inherit one thing - Roxanne's very distinct style.

What attracted you/got you started painting?

Picture books, sketching books, colouring pencils, art in galleries and books, and the smell of oil paints…..

What is your first painting memory? Was it something you painted; a painting that inspired you?

My first painting memory, other than pictures in books and in galleries was being given permission to have free rein with my bedroom walls. I painted huge murals from ceiling to floor.

What inspires you?

The world around me: Colours, shapes, composition. Art books, journals, galleries, Reading art theory and history, Travel, Art mediums, Music, Teaching senior students, family. Everything revolves around or has some connection to my painting.

What is your favourite colour pallet at the moment?

At the moment and usually, it is high key, I use a limited pallet to mix a wide range of hues. They are usual subtle. I enjoy working into wet paint for a tactile finish or working over dry using different glazes.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I work in oils, using the formal conventions of painting within the still life, landscape and figurative genre. However, I endeavour to maintain a conceptual undercurrent/dimension. At the moment this focuses on the poetics of place and belonging and the tension between belonging and isolation. My works are usually semi abstract in style.

Tell us a bit about your studio space...

My studio place is an open loft in my home. It is full of art books, journals and different materials and medium. It is warm and convenient as I enjoy the connection and noises of family while I work. Alternatively, when family are not around I listen to music. My house is on 6 acres of virgin bushland and the scenes from the windows can create a quiet and contemplative atmosphere that is also conducive to painting.

We are excited to present this weeks featured artist, Michele Morcos! A good friend of Breathing Colours, Michele continues to surprise us with her paintings, drawings and objects. We struggle to give a specific 'style' to her work, as she sweeps across so many different mediums, from pencils, to felt, to recycled plastic bags!

What attracted you/got you started on your artistic path?

Funny, as I was just talking about this with someone the other day, and marveling at where I am with my artistic practice! It is a gift to be able to play, create, dream, and listen to my artistic intuition everyday.

However, I didn’t always believe that it was possible to live this… I was always a kid who LOVED colouring in, making dolls dresses, and having fun in craft classes in and after school with projects like macramé, knitting, pasta drawings and clay modeling. But that is all I thought it was, just having fun as a kid. Soon I would have to ‘grow up’! It was only when I missed out on entering a fashion design course at University and got a place in COFA’s BFA course at 18 that I began to realize and believe that, yes, maybe I can be an artist!

And 16 years later Im still here, learning something new every single day!

What inspires you?

How much time do you have!!! I find inspiration in everything… the colours in our environments, the light and how it changes throughout the day, people, music, art, children’s creativity and enthusiasm for life and learning, patterns, textures, movement! It goes on and on…. I love taking photos, mainly for my blog, and when I look back at them, I realize that what captures my eye is so diverse. It constantly changes every day!

What is your favourite colour pallet at the moment?

Instead of telling you, I think I need to show you…

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Intuitive, textural, colourful, and emotive…. I hope!

Tell us a bit about your studio space…

Well I have had a few in the last couple of years. I was lucky enough to receive a studio residency at a place called Primrose Studios in Sydney for six months, which was life changing for me, and for my artwork. After that experience I moved back to what I call my ‘cobwebs + laundry’ studio which is located underneath my house! But seriously, it is a lovely little nook that is quiet and secluded. However, in winter it is freezing…! Therefore, I usually find myself retreating to a little desk inside my place then, and work on small detailed artworks … mainly because of the space! It’s tiny!!

So yes… I work in seasonal spaces and places!!

If you could peak inside the studio of any artist, designer or craftsmen (alive or dead) who would it be?

Ohhhh tough! I have sooo many favourite artists’ that it would tricky to narrow it down! Cy Twombly’s studio in Italy would be amazing to see and breathe in… Also in Europe, I would have loved to have met Sonia Delaunay and seen her space covered textures, colours, and patterns! Oh and then there is Elizabeth Cummings in the bush, Robert Rauschenberg in New York… Geez when would you like me to stop?!

What handmade possession do you most cherish?

Oh again – it’s tricky as I have been so so lucky to have been given some beautiful pieces by some very amazing artists’… especially all the ladies who I have worked with and become close with through Object Gallery. Then there are the beautiful earrings my lovely friend Amy Jenkin made for me a decade ago that I still love wearing today… and the lovely paintings I received for my 21^st birthday.

My room does look like an Aladdin’s cave, or a hoarder house from that reality t.v show…but I cannot deny that each piece inspires me and asks to be displayed! When the objects talk to you, you HAVE to pay attention to their whispers… and obey!

Featured Artist: Katherine Lys

We farewell the lovely Katherine Lys, who is heading overseas to new adventures and unfortunately her beautiful, bright glass pieces are going along for the ride! So after getting a little insight into her work processes and inspiration below, make sure you pop in this month to check-out her work before they board for Canada!!

What got you started in making glass?

I come from quite an athletic background, so one of the things that drew me into hot glass making was how physical it is - between gathering, blowing, shaping, torching, marvering - it's very active and fast paces. I love the culture in most hot studios - of team work and energy.

What inspires you and your collection?

I've been able to do a lot of travelling during my 4 years in Australia, some of it very exciting and adventurous - but usually long bushwalks that let me see Australia up close at a slower pace. I see this reflect in my work when I turn to methodical processes such as wood carving and work back and forth between the glass and wood until they sit together just right.

How would you describe you aesthetic?

I generally use very bright, funky colour combinations and have a playful way of arranging objects.

Tell us a bit about your studio space...

The hot glass studio is always dirty, loud, sweaty and smelly, that's the nature of working in front of a 1100C furnace. All the equipment and tools are made of steel, so they are protected from the effects of the heat. It sounds like a recipe for burns, but they don't happen very often.

What's in store for you in Canada? Will you still be making?

When I get to Canada I'll be finding a new hot glass studio to rent out in Calgary and training a new assistant. I plan to make lots of my product ranges in the next few months and get the work into the galleries. After this, I will resume my exhibition work and participate in group exhibitions. Calgary is hosting the National Glass Conference in 2013, so I look forward to helping make that happen. I'd like to get into coldworking and kiln casting a bit more, so that I can be less reliant on hot glass facilities and run a studio independently, from our dream home out in the bushes!

Featured Artist: Shimara Carlow

Scottish maker, Shimara Carlow, creates intricate silver and gold jewellery pieces, with a natural style. It’s no wonder her inspiration stems from seed pods, flowers and bird’s nests – allowing her work to inherit a raw and organic aesthetic. Shimara kindly took the time to answer a few questions, giving us a small peek into her background in jewellery, her studiospace and of course what’s next for Shimara and her jewellery!

What attracted you/got you started making jewellery?

When I was living in Scotland a child my farther was a jeweller, making etched Celtic brass jewellery for the tourist trade. I used to go help in the workshop and go to craft fairs with him for pocket money, although now I think about it I am not sure how much help I was!

What inspires you?

My work is predominantly inspired by nature, as luck would have it Gum Nuts are a big source of inspiration, along with other seed pods, flowers, birds nests and found objects.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I guess natural, tactile and earthy, yet still practical, wearable and beautiful.

Tell us a bit about your studio space…

I have an amazing studio in the grounds of Abbotsford Convent by The River Yarra in Melbourne. It is an old converted laundry building, with lots of space and natural light, not always the neatest studio, but organised chaos has always been my work ethos!

What was the first piece of jewellery you ever made?

Although I had made a few pieces in my dad’s workshop, this was the first thing I ever made at University. A pair of silver earrings set with lapis, probably for my mum, I don’t think she wore them!

What’s next for Shimara?

We have an open studio here in Melbourne on the 20^th of August, always a lovely opportunity to meet clients face to face, and for them to see where and how the work is made.
I have a trip to London for an international Trade show at the start of September, which will be great for contacts, and hopefully business.
And then I imagine the Christmas rush will be in full swing, and it will be total chaos until the 24^th of December! Every year I try to be more organised, and every year I fail miserably!

What started you working as a ceramicist?

I had a fun teacher in high school, and we went on a ceramics camp to Torquay and fired sculptures we had made from ceramic in a rubbish bin kiln...like a caveman I am fascinated by fire.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Anywhere. Reading about the adventures of Shackleton, watching ads for lady razors, Arts Project Australia (where I work), New Zealand pop music, travel, friends, family, monkeys...

How would you describe your aesthetic?

Pop, bright, shiny, fun.

Tell us a bit about your studio. Do you work alone? Share your space?

At the moment I work at Northcote Pottery, which has great light and lots of people going through the space for classes, kiln firing and supplies, giving the space a good creative flow! I have wallpapered the door and made a small arrangement in the window looking in. It is tiny though, I need more room!!

As a ceramicist do you have a favourite mug you have you sip your morning tea/coffee out of?

I wish I did. I feel somewhat ashamed to tell you the truth!

What’s next for Katie Jacobs? Travel? New work? Inspirations? Etc…

I am relocating to the US to study my Masters in Ceramics at Indiana University, working as a technician/Graduate Assistant in the studio. I can't wait!! I plan to come back in 3 years with renewed energy, fresh ideas and hopefully the words to prove it!

What got you started/interested in jewellery making?

There are a few clues in my childhood…I was always making and collecting things, I remember a pretty hard-core craft phase (pressed flower profusions and candle making mishaps) and these times surely cultivated my interest in creative processes. Even at primary school I was mostly interested in art lessons and loved succeeding at any project; I clearly remember in a senior class mastering the coping saw! I have a carpenter extraordinaire father and my mum works for a boutique jewellery store so in combination, I think that my becoming a maker was quite a natural cause don’t you think?

What inspired your new series of work?

This series called Arabeske is inspired by our travels to Turkey and the Middle East and namely the spirit of place that I found therein. I’m curious about the invisible weave of culture, stories, art, and beliefs that a place holds. Throughout my travels, I continually found myself mesmerised by the abundant ornamentation that was established in Middle Eastern Arts. I was as much inspired by the bountiful features and outstanding craftsmanship, as I was humbled by the faithful dedication to craft. My current Arabeske range aspires to share the enchanting world of emblem, arabesque and sacred geometry found in Turkish and Islamic tradition. Cultural awareness is important to my practice as an artist—as I delve into depicting texture and ornament, I am exploring ideas that interest me intellectually and spiritually.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

A fusion of flourish, arabesque and curlicues shapes. I enjoy saw piercing intricate motifs and decorating with semi-precious gemstones. I have been working with gemstones for many years and believe that they have talismanic significance.

Tell us a little about your studio life? In there much? Share it? Work alone?

I really look forward to my studio days! I get to see my lovely friend Jess, check out new exhibitions and pieces in the store, potter around the studio and enjoy walks around Balmain village. At the moment I can't spend as much time there as I would like, but I'm determined to change that in the near future. I love the new coral feature wall because it makes a cosy corner for me to nestle in at the bench. I find the best way to work is having a clean space for beading and decorating and a dirty space to saw and polish. I know I'm rather lucky to have two bench spaces to myself, but Jess knows she is welcome to share my tools anytime :)

What’s your earliest memorable piece of jewellery?

I have a little bluebird brooch that I'm pretty sure is as old as me. I also distinctly remember a gold bangle with a ballerina on it from my grandmother. I was told not to wear it to school and so of course I did...needless to say it was never seen again!

Whats next for Olenka and/or Arabeske?

Next up for me is an extra day in the studio and broadening the Arabeske range to include necklaces, rings and brooches. At the moment there is a lot of earring action happening so please stay tuned for the new pieces.

What attracted you/got you started in jewellery making?

At the time I started Mainichi (2004) I was busy primarily establishing my Interior Design practice here in Melbourne (Dearne Herrenberg Interiors). I wanted an outlet for some immediate creative satisfaction, something small which I could design and produce with my own hands in a relatively short period of time. Interior design tends to be a long, drawn out process, with alot of deadlines before any actual built works emerge, so the satisfaction of seeing your own ideas come to fruition can happen quite some time after actually generating those ideas.

With jewellery making it was quick to do, I had materials and equipment at hand that I could use, and I could do it after working hours, as a way to have some down time. It was also an escape from the computer and technology that I was using in my day to day design work.

What inspired your collection?

Initially a holiday in Japan got me inspired to start playing around with some materials I had purchased in Tokyo and Kyoto, and I had some designs in my mind for necklaces which really worked with the materials I brought back. Essentially, what underscores the whole philosophy of Mainichi is the materials - they are the real inspiration for the designs I produce.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I would say colourful, playful, graphic, feminine, fun, simple yet many-layered.

Tell us a bit about your studio space...

I work from a home based studio in East St Kilda. Initially it was designed by me and built to accommodate my Interior Design business, and it's accompanying large library of reference material. Slowly since my son was born in 2007, it has been taken over by Mainichi. I share the space with our kitchen, dining, and my son's play area. So it really is a multipurpose space. My studio takes up one long wall in the space, and consists of a long work bench, storage cupboards over, and a cabinet where all my printers and jewellery/craft materials are stored. Of course it can never be big enough!!

What’s next for Mainichi?

Becoming a Mum in 2007 gave me the incentive to focus more on Mainichi and less on my Interior design business, as it was easier to juggle with being a full time parent. Finally after almost 4 years I believe Mainichi is establishing a real niche and, I hope, a following. After the birth of my second child, which is imminent, I will be taking a short break from making; until I work out the logistics of managing Mainichi and two children! But I intend to return later in the year, full steam ahead, and perhaps with some new, fresh designs and ideas. I still have a long list of materials and making techniques that I want to explore and experiment with. And I'd like to work towards another exhibition of more experimental and sculptural designs, somewhere in the near future, similar to the window exhibition I produced for Craft Victoria last year (A Tale of Fish & Wood).

Ancient Lineage-The Path Travelled

Ancient Lineage – The Path Travelled is an extraordinary exhibition by Tina Cooper.

On some pieces within the exhibition Tina has collaborated with indigenous artist William Chambers. These pieces are called 'Wirrawongs' and focus on indigenous stories of family and history; these ideas depicted on the ancient medium of glass generate a “deeply felt response” resonating within each vessel.

The Art Of Margarette Looney opened with quite a buzz, with Margarette’s paintings drawing in a crowd to get a closer look at her water-based scenes – some familiar places (Balmain wharf) to other unfamiliar, untold places that can only become destinations in the viewer’s imagination.

This intriguing element of Margarette’s paintings has continued to catch the attention of passer-bys. who cannot resist coming in to visit the individual ‘places’. For works that depict a very quiet, soothing atmosphere, they have created a lot of active interest…

Breathing Colours: A New Chapter

As 2011 rolled in, it brought with it big changes for Breathing Colours. After 3 years, Chloe Waddell, the founder of Breathing Colours, has handed over the reins as she heads off onto new adventures in life! She has created an amazing gallery space and will be missed and we wish her the of best luck in her future endeavours.

This leads us to the introduction of Breathing Colours' (BC) new owner, Jessica Page! Coming from a background in contemporary jewellery (completed her B.V.A. at Sydney College of the Arts majoring in Jewellery and Object Design), Jess is a practicing jewellery artist as well as previously working as gallery and education assistant at Object Gallery, Sydney. She is enjoying her new role as gallery owner and director of Breathing Colours and hopes to "bring emerging and established Australian artists to the forefront and bridge the gap between commercial and artist run galleries."

With a new owner, come new pieces available in the BC gallery retail store. Originally known for its strong contemporary jewellery basis, the store is broadening its collection by introducing more glassware, ceramics and textile works by Sarah O' Sullivan, little luv and Karen Cunningham, to name a few.

Introducing: Sarah O'Sullivan

"My work has always drawn from domestic function as a context, yet I rarely produce anything functional. Rather, I hope to promote reflection on the purpose of these objects.
The process utilised is a contradiction to the final pieces created- I employ a production process of slip-casting that is designed to create exact replicas, however the end result is always unique, one-off pieces. It’s easy to overlook something ordinary we use everyday; my work is trying to expel the overlooked everyday use of ceramics, and instead highlight the beauty we can find in the objects around us.
I intend for my ceramics to contemplate the relationship we have with objects in our environment, with a heavy emphases on both the final aesthetic result and the making process. I am interested in creating objects of curiosity as well as of beauty, resulting in a combination of both functional and non-functional pieces.

Within my art practice, I also have a love of re-using and reinterpreting or reconceptualising objects and designs; and have often utilised traditional forms or found objects to which I can add a new story, whilst still referencing the notion of sentiment. I love that these forms act as reminders of previous generations, and the role that ceramics played within their social culture." - Sarah O'Sullivan.

Introducing: little luv

"While most people would overlook a discarded sewing machine by the side of the road, one entrepreneurial mother, Mardi Zeunert, saw it as an opportunity to unleash her creative passion and as a result, bespoke toys, little luv was born. A year ago, the thrifty mother-of-one, sought an activity to occupy her time while daughter, Poppy, then aged one, napped. It was a no brainer that the former Adelaide Festival media ticketing officer embarked on a creative venture, demonstrating an artistic flair producing a book, Vintage Colour in 2005, with London photographer,

Steven Morris, showcasing the Australian Wine Industry. “The catalyst for little luv was when I bought a mobile over the Internet and was disappointed with its quality,” Mardi said. “Following a sewing lesson from a friend, I planned to borrow my mum’s machine to get things started, but after finding the machine, I no longer needed mum’s,” she said. Now 12 months on, little luv is a mainstay at local markets including the hugely popular Mathilda’s market, Mardi often selling out of the popular handmade toys such as the Birdy Mobiles, Do Not Disturb Birdies and Nonite Owls.

“I adore the market atmosphere, particularly the face-to-face contact with customers

and get a real kick out of seeing the joy on their faces,” Mardi said. “It’s really heartening to know that the products can bring so much happiness to both the purchaser and the receiver – just as much of a buzz as I get from making them.” Mardi said while her little luv creations were designed for expectant mums and young children, the products were proving to be very popular with adults too. “The Birdy Mobiles have taken off with adults. Several women have purchased the Mobiles to hang in their offices and homes. Some of the items have even been bought and sent across to England and the United States as one-of-a-kind presents for homesick Australian expats and their children,” Mardi said.

Not only does Mardi adore trawling through unique vintage fabrics at opportunity shops, but also her hand crafted toys deliver a message with names such as ‘Save the Whaley’. She also loves incorporating some ‘vintage Australiana fabrics’ into her creations, depicting Australian wildflowers and Aboriginal motifs. She is also thrilled to have started using an eco-friendly corn fibre filling in all her creations, manufactured in Australia. “I’m all for instilling some positive messaging in ‘little luvs’ about nurturing the environment, animals and human beings. There’s a wonderful synergy between education and play, so I was keen to incorporate the two.” said Mardi."

Introducing: Karen Cunningham

"Based in Adelaide, Australia, Karen Cunningham divides her time between Blue Pony Studio and JamFactory – Centre for Contemporary Craft and Design. She completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Glass) degree at the South Australian School of Art, University of South Australia. Her Honours (First Class) work was selected for the PICA National Graduate Exhibition, 2005, and given the Design Institute of Australia Achievement Award for Glass Design. During the two year Design Associate intensive training program at JamFactory, she was selected for the Pilchuck Scholarship, taking her to Seattle for a workshop at the renowned Pilchuck Glass School.

Highly skilled in glass-blowing, she has worked and trained in the U.S.A, Turkey and Germany, most recently returning from Europe and the U.K where she was mentored by design legend Marc Newson. She was also a guest at Kosta Boda glass factory in Sweden, Droog Design in Amsterdam as well as attending many other centres for design and glass in Europe. The objects she creates are unique and greatly considered as she manages to combine the design element with the hand-made. Her work has won two national design awards." - K. Cunningham

Glass Artist Katherine Lys

Katherine Lys is a glass artist originally from Calgary, Canada, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in glass. She is currently living and working in Perth. Lys has been the recipient of several awards and exhibits regionally and nationally. Her focus is blown glass, but she also works with glass fusing and slumping, as well as woodcarving and life drawing.
Katherine's work centers around juxtaposition - how one colour lays against another, or how two materials highlight each other's qualities. However, she is more interested in the subtle discrepencies rather than stark contrast - asking what makes us the same, rather than what makes us different?
Katherine is currently working with Anne Clifton who's exhibition we have on display until the 18th of September. If you flick back to the earlier post on 'how to make a furnace' you will see both Anne and Katherine working their magic with glass.

“New Chevron: Bead Objects of Desire” A collectable contemporary look at an ancient tradition of glassmaking. On show at Breathing Colours Gallery from Tuesday 7th until Sat 18th September.

Making glass beads has become a very popular hobby throughout Australia. With numerous classes and workshops on making your own glass beads, it is no surprise we see so many of them throughout shops, galleries and market stalls. With such a flooded market however, the term glass bead can conjure up some unfortunate images.

Anne Clifton has this same passion for making beads but unlike many of the others, she is a glassmaker by profession. These are glass beads unlike any you’ve seen before. With such amazing colours, patterns and exquisite workmanship, these are beautiful objects in their own right without any need to be attached to a necklace. Each piece is very carefully finished to the highest standard with every edge smoothed and every side polished. They feel like little treasures when you hold them in your hand.

“I do have a fascination with beads: seashells with holes in them, limestone with holes in it, driftwood with holes in it, tools, cans, really anything with a hole in it is a bead to me.
I think this stems from an overly abundant childhood full of frustrations. Wanting to create but not having the technology to do ANYTHING. So basically things with holes became my doorway to art”

Anne was born in the South West Tall Timbers country of Western Australia. At the age of four, her family moved to the US as her parents thought it “the best place for educating girls.” Here Anne spent the long summer holidays traipsing around the continent. History, Geography, and Sociology were constant topics and every roadside marker had its relevance to The Education. As a result Anne’s constant source of interest and amusement was more knowledge. Upon their return to Australia, Anne’s thirsty mind naturally turned to the arts, here she was able to play at processes, techniques of expression and heavy machinery.

Many years later finally hot glass has stopped this dilettante –ism. That, and a partner who knows more about something than she does. The result is Glass Manifesto, the studio and gallery Anne established in 2003 with her partner Peter Bowles. Check out their website for more examples of Anne and Peter’s work.

Our work merges qualified study (Cert. Dip. Bachelor Fine-art, Graphic Design, Jewellery making) with different cultural influences, travel, life experiences, and a shared lifetime passion to connect through use of the eye/hand/soul.

Making a Furnace Bead by Anne Clifton

Anne gives us an insight into the making process for her upcoming exhibition "New Chevron: Bead Objects of Desire" on display at Breathing Colours from next Tuesday 7th until Sat 18th September.

I call them Latticino's because that's how we make the cane (but without the bubble)

Firstly start with the colour choice. Then you have to decide whether the bead is going to have an overlay colour centre (gives depth) or just an opaque centre. I have decided on tea with a white stringer pattern for simplicity.

I cut the stringers and preheat them in an optic mold and I cut the colour and preheat it in a small kiln

this is a small torch just tickling the canes to keep them warmish - too hot and I get scuff from the optic mold

you have to remember which colour is which because they all look the same when pre-heated!

I preheat my blowing iron and Katherine picks up the colour and gets it nice and hot for me but we have to share the glory hole - it's even trickier when there are three of us!

and then we pull and twist. The even-ness of the twist is determined by my end, Katherine just needs to keep up. (In the opposite direction!)

Anita Jokovich presents a series of dramatic paintings which
emanate raw emotion. She uses a layering technique to portray light and dark, and the culmination of mood, thought and experience.

Anita likens her work to the perpetual movement of the ocean. Like waves, each layer is unique in its own right – allowing her paintings to take on a life of their own.

Anita holds a Bachelor of Arts in Design from Curtin University, and currently works as an Art Director in Sydney. Her passion lies with all things creative, including photography and drawing, however it is painting which enables her to express herself most creatively.

EYES: a window to the soul, 10th to 21st August

This exhibition is a collaboration between seven artists: Vivienne Mewings, Jacky Lawes, Andrea Williams, Louise Smith, Lisa Lynton-Frost, Barbara Wade and Julianne Ross Allcorn. EYES: a window to the soul is on display at breathing colours gallery from Tue 10th to Sat 21st August (10am to 6pm Tue to Sat).

This project was initiated by a small group of artists inspired to pay respect to the work of classical masters. Focusing on small sections of familiar paintings, these artists have created their own studied details from each artwork. By closing in on the particular area of the eyes, the question is posed, whose eyes are we now looking through? The eyes of the artist? The eyes of the subject? Or simply our own eyes, those of the viewer?

Roxanne Lillis’ lines relate to the continuous. “It’s really the moving dot. The brush comes off the artwork for a period of review, and returns to continue my form of communication. The subject matter or impetus was inspired by the infinite rows of buildings and entangled electrical wires in busy built up areas observed during recent travels.”

Loren Keir’s lines have developed their own lives. “Some are destined to go on forever, some end where they started, some diverge in different directions - travelling and exploring, whilst others orbit the same place, drawn to its familiarity. Some lines begin to blur into others combining to become one while other lines clearly contrast their surroundings or the lines next to them. Some use those around to define themselves while others stand alone making their own impact.”

Roxanne Lillis began her studies at the Julian Ashton Art School in 1993 and achieved her Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong in 1999. She has exhibited regularly around New South Wales throughout the last 15 years.

Loren Keir graduated with honours from the jewellery and object department of Sydney College of the Arts. She has exhibited widely in Sydney and New South Wales and is part of the artist collective Makers Manifold.

A SERIES OF WORK BY RICHARD DENNY. 29th June to 17th July

Once whilst meandering through the streets of an unusually snow-
covered Marseille, Richard Denny discovered an abandoned box of maps.
Upon further examination it was an extensive collection, holding
topographic portrayals of most regions of France.

By deploying the found maps as an actual canvas, and a basis for his
characters, he has found a means of dripping ﬂavours of personality
and territory over the maps. Using the lines of contour, river, border
and road, Denny would paint in his own lines, shapes and textures.

Later, from these cartographic cross-hatchings would emerge characters
representing people, daily experiences or settings, that Denny
acknowledged inhabiting the streets in his new home. He used what
little he had at hand to locate himself in his new culture showing
telltale signs of a bricoleur.

Fleeting is the exploration of embellished memories and the gravity of transitory moments.

Rachel Wells

Rachel’s pieces are inspired by childhood memories and the joy of discovery in a storybook landscape. Her mixed media and encaustic paintings exist nowhere tangible and are pieced together from memories of European, Australian and American towns.

Dan Capper

Dan Capper’s mono-prints and mixed media paintings capture a spontaneous imprint of a fleeting moment in time. He uses the bird as a metaphor for the shifts and flux in relationships.

Wanderings 1st-12th june 2010
Kristen Lethem worked as an illustrator in London for 14 years before returning to Sydney where she now lives and paints in Balmain. Kristen’s paintings are primarily inspired by the the landscapes in and around her family home in the Hunter Valley. ‘After so many years in the UK, I was struck by the harshness of light resulting in almost bleached flat colour, with very dark areas of contrast. Solitary gums casting strange shapes on bleached hillsides.’ Kristen was awarded the UNSW COFA prize at the 2009 Paddington Art Prize

Verity Roberts’ paintings reflect her passion for life. With a background in art direction and set decoration, she is an expert of beautiful detail. Observations of daily life and the interiors where much of it takes place are an intrinsic part of her painting. Each piece reflecting an intimate moment in time: a scent, a meal, a place, a memory. Many of Verity’s more recent works have focused on her passion of travel. For an exhibition at Breathing Colours last year, she created a series of ‘postcards’ from around the world. The pieces she has created for ‘Wanderings’ are a continuation of that body of work but this time she has cast a smaller net and is focusing simply on her love of Venice.
Kirsten Hilliard is a Glebe based artist with a background in Art Direction and Graphic Design. Her paintings are based upon the ordinary aspects of life, and often engage the viewer to feel a sense of nostalgia. Kirsten’s palette ranges from very minimal and whimsical to bold and moody, depending on the narrative of the painting. She draws or uses scraffito technique to create her images, often using many layers of paint over a textured base. This is what gives the paintings their translucent feel.

Wow, it has been a really long time since our last post here! Our lovely gallery assistant Ashley Fiona who began this blog and has been consistently and devotedly updating it has left us here at breathing colours (hopefully not for good) to focus on her studies. We are very proud and excited for her to be doing more of what she loves best, but of course sorry to lose her and also very sorry we haven't carried on her good work here. However, on a more positive note, we are very pleased to introduce and welcome the lovely Helen Daley who will be taking over the reins.

Current Exhibition: 'By The Water' paintings by Fiona Barrett-Clark

Working directly from photos, Fiona not only aims to capture the atmosphere of the landscape but also to create a reflection of the emotions she was experiencing when she took the image. Her use of plywood instead of board or canvas gives a fantastic grainy texture to the works reflecting the grit of nature and imbuing them with the feel of old slides and photographs adding further to the reminiscent nature of the works.

"I have a love affair with being by the water and so this exhibition centres around natural water ways, rivers, bays and primarily the coastline. The coast has a freshness, a smell that makes you feel young again, it rejuvenates the spirit and allows you to escape from normal life. Standing on a beach in the midst of winter, that cold salty air blowing through your hair or entering the surf on a hot summer’s day, its visceral effect is instantaneous. I hope when people view these works it reminds them of the tang of the sea, the occasional stillness of the water before the storm and the soft light on the water at the end of the day. Again, I have worked directly from photos and use oils on plywood to give a grainy texture to the works, which attempts to reflect the grit of nature and imbues a nostalgic feeling to the pieces "

Current Exhibition: 'Cockatoo In Time' By Jacqueline Lamb - 5 to 16 May

Our current exhibition is a collection of encaustic works inspired by Sydney’s Cockatoo Island:

"Upon my arrival on Cockatoo Island, at first glance it was just another tired island with an interesting history. On closer view I saw the strange metallic guardians, and sentinels of long ago, some reaching up to the sky to perhaps ward off an attack, others buckled over in defeat, all inert and lifeless as if someone just pulled the plug and walked away.

An island with as many lives as a cat: a Penitentiary; an Industrial School for Girls; a World War II Naval Dry Dock to name only a few. The only survivors of those days are rusting cranes, cogs, decrepit working sheds and discarded machinery, some having lived through more than one island life, all having their own interesting stories to tell.

I chose encaustic (beeswax) and oil as my preferred mediums. Wax, like the machinery is inert until you reactivate it, where it once again comes alive to do our bidding. Melted wax was poured onto boards or on top of photgraphs I had taken of the island. Like the photographs under the wax, so too is the history of the island buried; an undercurrent of events now hushed by time."

Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Jacqueline Lamb began painting at an early age. She has studied at various institutions in both Melbourne and Sydney as well as attending many private classes with local artists. A regular participant in group exhibitions and art prizes throughout New South Wales, Jacqueline was recently awarded “Viewers Choice” at the 2008 Lane Cove Art Awards.

Open Bite Printmakers present: 'Well Laid' 21 April to 2 May

A beautiful collection of fine art prints by the Open Bite Printmakers

There are some descriptive terms used in printmaking that can appear to be ‘double entendre’. In fact, such terms as ‘the bed of the press’ and ‘pulling a proof’ which describe parts of a printing press and printing a proof seem to have anthropomorphic, and somewhat sexualized, connotations. However, the physical act of working on an etching plate with tools, aquatint rosin and acid require time and effort on the part of the printmaker. Similarly, the processes of making a lithograph, collagraph or linocut may take several days, weeks or even months. The printmaker will carefully check each stage of the process by pulling a proof. Ultimately, the printmaker, as creator, wants to be satisfied that each of the processes undertaken will culminate in a ‘well laid’ image. This final image is printed on archival paper and the creator knows that the image will endure. It is Well Laid.

Open Bite is a vital group of 30 printmakers. The group originated from Ku-ring-gai Community Art Centre but now includes members from all over Sydney. Experienced artists, teachers and competition winners are included. Members range from etchers to mixed media artists, with traditional and abstract styles.

Requiem Wanderer explores the abandoned architecture built both below and above street level including quarries, catacombs, powerstations, bunkers, and theatres. This collection spans nine years of photography around the world with a sturdy camera in hand at each and every opportunity.

A location in jeopardy is what drives and captures the imagination of this photographic journal.

Submerse yourself in the catacombs under Paris where the French resistance fought.

Explore a theme park in New Orleans abandoned after Hurricane Katrina.

Or meander through the remnants of the BHP steelworks in Newcastle.

It is within the small time frame of dereliction these photos are captured. They were taken mainly at night with natural moonlight or various lighting techniques to create a unique atmosphere.

"Fabrication" is on show from 10th to 21st March at Breathing Colours Gallery. Meet the artist Saturday 20th March 2-4pm at Breathing Colours Gallery.

Award-winning mosaic artist, Marian Shapiro makes original, hand-crafted, contemporary mosaic pieces using traditional techniques. Originally trained in art and theatre, she became fascinated by the possibilities of this ancient art and has been a full-time mosaicist since 2003. Shown and collected nationally and internationally, she has been commissioned by many private clients in Australia, the UK and USA and has several recent public and commercial commissions in Sydney.

Marian's recent works explore the verisimilitude of familiar objects to suggest that things are not as they appear.

"Materials play a major role in creating illusion within my works. The process of cutting and shaping also transforms them into something new. In using dense materials, such as glass and stone, I translate them into flowing forms while retaining the illusion of softness and pliability."

Marian states that: "In using sculptural forms to represent the ‘essence’ of an object, I draw on its history and our expectations of it within the contemporary world.

In “Fabrication”, glass curtains flap wildly – yet there is no breeze. Traditional patterns decorate cushions – yet their hard surface belies their history of comfort and promise of softness. "In oscillating between the familiar and the bizarre, and the reality and the artifice, I aim to create a slight feeling of displacement and provoke new ways of looking at familiar objects."

My first Holga toy camera came into my life one fateful day in 2005. I was intrigued not only by the plastic lens but the fact I’d heard it was unashamedly the worst camera ever made. A perfect combination of my favourite things, toys and photography, from the outset I adored the randomness of each captured image.

All the flaws despised by digital cameras, the Holga embraces. Various light leaks, vignetting and a real ‘Box Brownie’ feel means every roll is a complete surprise, as is photography using such a temperamental camera. He either decides to work or calls in sick. We fight, we make up and we travel together capturing things that excite us…. Neon signs, roadside motels, abandoned places and island tikis.

Cross processing 120mm slide film allows me to produce over saturated colours and surreal skies. Fiery passionate reds, sickening yellows, deep melancholic blues.
In 5 years we’ve journeyed far but always forgive each other our little quirks & mistakes. Fast paced driving to dusty towns or sleep inducing plane trips over miles of endless sea my Holga adventures are just beginning.

Kate Williams, Ingrid van der Aa and Sue Roberts present an exhibition of their recent work at Breathing Colours Gallery.

Ingrid Van der Aa’s latest work consists of paintings influenced by her time living on the NSW Central Coast, where she was inspired by the beauty of the native palm trees and the Australian bush. Originally from the Netherlands, Australian nature in relation to European nature is what fascinates Van der Aa. The questions where do I belong, where are my roots and can I make new roots are all parallel to the theme of the trees. Essential to this work is the material used and the gestural way the theme is explored.

Kate Williams begins her work by laying down a ground of ink, bleach and water in random fashion. These underlying marks are unstructured, uncontrolled by the artist. However the subsequent markings are deliberate: an airbrush is used to move fine lines of ink around the work – intricate webs of drawing that interact with the “natural” beneath. But although these man-made marks strive for control, they, too, often take unexpected turns. Kate’s explorations are always focused on the material aspect of painting in revealing that the surface is of utmost importance to the final work.

Sue Roberts sculptures are based on the skeletal form. She finds inspiration in the underlying simple geometry of an object, the internal composition and structure. Beginning from the core of the subject, all else radiates out into the finished form. Based on drawings in clay and line, initial explorations and reference materials eventually transform into the final works. Dealing with the theme of entrapment, Sue seeks to describe her surroundings with the idea that everything around us is encompassed or contained by something else and we need to peel back the layers to reveal the true identity of the subject.

After a lovely Christmas and New Years break, Breathing Colours Gallery is back and well into the swing of things for 2010!
This years calendar is already filling up with many exciting and colourful exhibitions.
A new decade brings a new year and with the new year brings new artists, new work and plenty of surprises so stay tuned for all the latest that Breathing Colours has in store for 2010!

Chaos was our first exhibition to open the new year, and what an exhibition it was!
Works featured Makers Manifold and special guests - Loren Keir, Mirna Harri, Rosary Coloma, Sheree Lee, Chloe Waddell, Jessica Page, Jemma Bree Dickson, Natalie Sharpe and Amber Reid.
Makers Manifold is a Sydney based collective formed in 2005. They have exhibited together a number of times throughout the last five years. At each new exhibition they invite a few extra special guests to exhibit as part of the group which means the dynamics are always changing. The seven founding members studied jewellery and object design at Sydney College of the Arts and have gone on to explore varied career paths.

Breathing Colours Christmas show "A little Bit of Red" includes a variety of wall, sculptural and wearable works by some of our favourite Breathing Colourers and is our last exhibition for 2009! The exhibition brief was simply to create an artwork that included a little bit of red. The gallery space is filled with vibrant colour and artworks of all shapes and sizes that are a feast for the eye! Every work sold may be taken away at point of sale, so be sure to come in before they disappear! The opening was a great success with many a cheer for the fast approaching festive season. We have extended our opening hours for the month of December and will be open every day until Christmas Eve.

Breathing Colours gallery is proud to present: “The Silver Room” an exciting collection of contemporary jewellery by seven of Sydney’s most talented emerging jewellers.

For their first exhibition together: Momoko Hatano, Elizabeth Reed, Erin Cuthbert
Philippa Thomas, Ben Pearce, Kasia Sujecki and Rhonda Dwyer have composed a unique, eclectic selection of jewellery.

Using mostly silver combined with a variety of less traditional materials. The resulting pieces are both interesting and elegant, individual and stylish. Each motivated by their own series of desires and inspirations, from a love of childhood and innocence to an interest in animal documentaries and kitsch aesthetics the resulting jewellery is equally diverse.

This group of artists have come together through a common love of making. Many of them work together in a shared studio while others are simply part of the strong and supportive contemporary jewellery community which flourishes in the galleries and studios around Sydney.

Kyoko Hashimoto's latest series is a tribute to the often overlooked insect, inspired by Victorian mourning jewellery. Her limited edition pendants are bold, quirky and fun.
Julia Storey's ‘Bird and Cage’ pendant is hand made in sterling silver. The oval pendant features a bird on one side and cage on the other. When spun, bird appears in the cage.

An exhibition of painting, drawing and photography by four fabulous local artists

Vladimir Pavlovic has been taking photographs for well over 3 decades and has worked in theatre, stills, magazine and archaeological photographic arenas. The 5 photos on show at Breathing Colours encapsulate a certain chronology accessing negatives that were taken almost 30 years ago as well as a sample of current directions which draws upon the manipulation of appropriated details and work that bypasses the use of a camera.

The reading of the facsimile of A Voyage to Terra Australis by Flinders published in 1814, urged Glenda Jones to reinterpret and thus revisit the book's etched prints which were based on Westall’s original, commissioned watercolours of the Australian coastline. The etchings have been photo-shopped, cropped and made lurid with oils on blackened canvas, to contemporise those images which were, in their original form, far more ordered and austere.

Barbara Schaffer’s current body of work has been inspired by a recent trip to Europe in which she was amazed and overwhelmed by the power and beauty of the religious art she discovered throughout churches and cathedrals on her travels. Working mainly with oil pastels on canvas, Schaffer feels this medium offers the possibility for working very directly and intuitively, the colours are rich and intense and the pastels allow for easy mixing and building up of texture.

If there is a dark side, Michael Sagan will detail it out. His small canvases pack an insidious punch with their tightly controlled palette and seemingly innocuous subject matter.

Current Exhibition "Whim Wish Itch" By Loren Keir and Roxanne Lillis, 21st October to 1st November

For their second collaborative exhibition at Breathing Colours Gallery, Loren Keir and Roxanne Lillis explore the whimsical, fantastical world of the artist's imagination. Both artists have been working intuitively on their respective bodies of work and have allowed the art to take them on a journey rather than the other way around.

Roxanne Lillis body of work has emerged through a linear process of exploration. The series began with three elfish figures in white dresses. After contemplating the story surrounding them, she placed these figures into their own personal narratives. They appeared wandering the fantastical streets of the artist’s abstracted cities and towns. Through the painting of these works, a new theme developed when a bright red balloon emerged in the landscape thus beginning a third series. The resulting paintings are whimsical and peaceful. As in all of Roxanne Lillis’s paintings there is a very still contemplative feel to the work.

Loren Keir approached her work from a slightly different standpoint. Beginning with paint, a palette knife and paper, she simply began to work. Letting her intuition guide her, she scratched into the paint, drew over sections, ripped pieces apart, glued them back together and worked back over it with her palette knife. From this process she created a series of small intimate abstract paintings which then became inspiration for her jewellery. Her series of brooches and rings mirror the beauty of working in metal. Although finished jewellery products are usually clean, shiny and smooth, the method of making jewellery couldn’t be more different. Loren has captured the rough, raw beauty of the metal working process.

Roxanne Lillis began her studies at the Julian Ashton Art School in 1993 and achieved her Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong in 1999. She has exhibited regularly around New South Wales throughout the last 15 years.

Loren Keir graduated with honours from the jewellery and object department of Sydney College of the Arts. She has exhibited widely in Sydney and New South Wales and is part of the artist collective Makers Manifold.

'Growing up we’d regularly go on driving holidays, mostly through NSW. From the backseat I remember seeing the countryside whizzing by and occasionally we’d stop at a nice spot to stretch our legs. To this day there is still nothing I enjoy more than ‘passing through’ the changing landscape.'

Fiona Barrett-Clark’s paintings reflect the beauty of an uncomplicated, understated, remote landscape, void of people, but not always human presence. She cleverly embodies the sense of escapism we feel when on a driving holiday.

The sky is always a major element in her compositions and she has become an expert in capturing the moods these skies cast upon the landscape. That late afternoon, early evening soft magenta and grey-blue which reflect upon the ocean or the blurring of the landscape during a soft drizzle.

Fiona's use of plywood instead of board or canvas gives a fantastic grainy texture to the works which imbues them with the feel of old slides and photographs adding further to the reminiscent nature of the works.

Over the past 10 years, Fiona Barrett-Clark has exhibited her work in several group and solo shows throughout Sydney. She completed an Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts in 1999 and was a finalist for the prestigious Glover Prize in 2008.

Work by Rachel Wells, Verity Roberts and Maryanne Parry

Rachel Wells is a Sydney based mixed media artist who works predominantly with encaustic (wax) and oil mediums. Her processes involve etching into the surface of the wax and applying paint in layers upon it. Rachel’s current work focuses on the built environment. She is fascinated by European, American and Australian architecture and an (architect) father obsessed with taking photos of buildings.

Verity Roberts’ recent series of work is inspired by her passion for travel. These “postcards” are painted in mixed media and contain acrylics, ink, shellac, bitumen, graphite, oil pastels and acetates. Verity has also used encaustic (beeswax) which helps suggest the passage of time.
This series represents the artist’s interpretation and reflection on these landscapes which she has passed through and over – the delicacy and oftentimes brutality which is reflected therein.

MaryAnne Parry is inspired by a constant fascination with the world we live in. The variety of environments and cultures, the miracle of growth, and the opposing nobility and folly of humanity, never cease to amaze her. Both the landscape of Africa, where she was born, and Australia, where she now lives, are evident in the burnt and intense colour featured throughout many of her paintings.

The legend of the iconic Ned Kelly has inspired Catherine Kelly's series, as well as the collection of armour of Henry 8th. Lindsay Mathieson applies the use of beautiful classic silhouettes and diverse textures that make her pieces very individual, elegant and sophisticated. Rebecca Willis is inspired by the myths, legends and iconic images that surround some of these old rogues. Cannibalism, tropical birds, faded ocean maps, golden pieces of eight and of course the Jolly Roger all play their part. Jennifer Kelly's series is inspired by Asylum seekers - their search for freedom from unspeakable hardships to a land of privilege and opportunity, Australia. They are greeted by bureaucracy and an unsympathetic nation where they are treated as if they are outlaws.
